Mary became interested in crafting from her mom, Betty Kennedy. Betty, along with other ladies from the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Rosary/Altar/Bazaar Society, started knitting Christmas Stockings for the bazaar. She then decided to make these Christmas stockings for each of her children. Two boys at the time,,,,,,,, 5 children later, along with spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her 2 sisters' families, her mom hand knitted over 60 Christmas stockings! Mary always wanted to learn knitting to carry the tradition on. Her mom was left-handed and felt she couldn’t teach her right-handed daughter, but at the same time the Schoharie School had an arts and crafts summer program and Mary went to it. "I wish I could remember the teacher’s name! She taught me the awesome craft of knitting in only several weeks"! Along with her mom, Mary developed a love for working with yarns. She is a self-taught crocheter and joined a group called Loose Ends, who connect folks in the area with artisans who may be able to complete a special or sentimental project that a loved one can no longer finish.
